A typing RPG for ages 8–12

Your kid learns to type.
Their hero earns the loot.

Tale Typer is a real keyboarding curriculum disguised as a heroic RPG. Your kid types to save the kingdom — and their accuracy and speed climb without them noticing.

No ads. No open chat. No leaderboards strangers can shame your kid on. Just one story worth finishing and a parent dashboard that shows you it’s working.

How it plays

Pick. Type. Earn the loot.

Three minutes from sign-up to a kid yelling “just one more chapter.”

  1. Pick your hero.

Skin tone, hair, face — done in two minutes. Your hero levels up as you do.

  2. Type the story.

Four chapters of The Last Lantern. Your typing IS the action — every sentence moves the plot.

  3. Earn the loot.

Coins drop on every clean run. Spend them on hats, capes, swords, and shields you can't get any other way.

For both of you

One subscription. Two reasons to start.

For your kid

Stuff to do that’s actually fun.

  • Build a hero that gets cooler the more you type.
  • Earn coins on clean runs and spend them on gear no parent can buy for you.
  • Find out what happens to Mira and the lantern — only your typing keeps the story going.
  • Show up every day and watch the streak grow. Six journey badges are already waiting.
  • Weak on Q and Z? The game spots it and runs you a quick drill. No wrong-answer punishment.

For you

Reasons you can defend at the dinner table.

  • No ads on any kid-facing surface. No third-party tracking pixels.

An automated test fails the build if a tracker slips in

  • No open chat, no leaderboards, no DMs from strangers.

    Solo + family-only, by design

  • Standards-aligned curriculum: home row → top row → bottom → numbers.

Targets are graded to your kid's age band

  • Plain-English coach's notes — "Ava's slow on Q and Z, send her a 2-min drill."

Live on your dashboard from day one

  • We email you 24h before the first charge. Cancel from the dashboard in two clicks.

Zero retention funnels, zero dark patterns

The honest version

Why most typing tutors fail.

You’ve probably tried one already. Here’s what you ran into — and what we built instead.

  1. The problem. “Drill until it sticks.” Most typing tutors are 30 minutes of home-row repetition. Your kid quits in week two.

What we do. Tale Typer wraps the drills inside a story your kid wants to finish — they keep typing because they want to know what happens next.

  2. The problem. “Kids will pick it up.” School assumes typing comes naturally. It doesn't — most 4th-graders type with two fingers and look at the keyboard.

What we do. We teach touch-typing the way kids already learn — through characters, quests, and small wins they can show their family.

  3. The problem. “Fun” that isn't real curriculum. Some games gamify a single drill and call it pedagogy. Your kid plays for a week and learns nothing.

What we do. Tale Typer is built on standards-aligned keyboarding pedagogy: home row → top row → bottom row → numbers and symbols. Adaptive to your kid’s actual speed.

Three steps

From signup to playing in three minutes.

  1. You sign up.

7-day free trial, card on file. We email you 2 days before the first charge — cancel anytime in 1 click from your dashboard.

  2. Your kid builds a hero.

Two minutes in the character creator. They land on the Training Grounds with Quest 1 unlocked.

  3. They play. You peek.

Twelve Training Grounds quests, then The Last Lantern. Your dashboard shows streaks, stars, and plain-English coach's notes — built on a standards-aligned home-row → top → bottom → numbers progression that adapts to your kid's actual speed.

Good questions

Answers before you ask.

Is it really ad-free? No catch?
No catch. Zero ads on any kid-facing page. No Meta / TikTok / Google Ads pixels anywhere in the child surface. An automated test fails the build if a third-party script slips in. The subscription is how we stay alive — that means nobody else is paying for your kid's attention.
Why do you need a card upfront if the trial is free?
Two reasons. One — it confirms a real parent is signing up, not a kid behind their parent's back. Two — it lets the trial flow seamlessly into the subscription if your kid keeps playing, with no friction. We never charge during the trial, and we email you 2 days before the first charge so cancellation is one click away.
What if my kid loses interest after a week?
Cancel before day 8 and you're never charged. Cancel after — partial-refund if your kid hasn't logged a session that month. The cancel flow is 1 click from your dashboard with no retention funnel and no "are you sure?" guilt-trip. We email you 2 days before billing so you have time to decide.
Can I see what my kid is actually doing?
Yes. Your parent dashboard shows daily streaks, weekly minutes, accuracy by key, and plain-English coach's notes ("Ava's strong on home row, slow on Q and Z"). No charts to squint at. You can also pop into your kid's account directly to see their hero and quest progress.
What ages is this for?
Designed for ages 8–12. The pedagogy targets grade-3-through-8 WPM goals (15 WPM @ 85% accuracy → 40 WPM @ 95%). Accessibility defaults — dyslexia-friendly font, reduced-motion mode, colorblind-safe palette — are per-child profile, parent-configurable.
What devices work?
Any modern browser on a keyboard-equipped device. We test on mid-range Chromebooks (the dominant homeschool device) and the game loads to playable in under three seconds. No app to install, no app-store gatekeepers.

Give them a typing game they’ll ask to play.
